Sihr — often translated as sorcery or black magic — is one of the most serious subjects in Islamic theology, and also one of the most misunderstood. Some dismiss it as superstition; others fear it without understanding it. Islam takes a clear middle position: sihr is real, it is forbidden, and it has a lawful remedy. This article lays out what sihr actually is according to Quran and Sunnah, and how it's addressed.
What Sihr Actually Is
Sihr can be broadly described as a body of knowledge and practice in which a person uses symbols, objects, or actions — hair, food, water, names, images, and similar items — combined with words or rites that invoke something other than Allah ﷻ, in order to bring about a specific outcome for or against someone. Its effects can be physical, mental, emotional, or circumstantial.
The Quran is explicit that sihr has a real effect, but only ever by Allah ﷻ's permission:
“...and they [the two angels] would teach no one until they had said, 'We are but a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing sorcery].' And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:102This same ayah is why sihr is considered an act of disbelief (kufr) and a form of shirk — it typically involves seeking help from other than Allah ﷻ, often through jinn, and invoking things forbidden in the sacred law to gain power or effect. The Prophet ﷺ, peace be upon him, said:
“Three will not enter Paradise: the habitual drinker of alcohol, the one who severs the ties of kinship, and the one who believes in sorcery.”
— Ibn Hibban, AhmadSihr Is Not a Later Superstition — It Happened to the Prophet ﷺ Himself
One of the most important facts often overlooked is that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself was afflicted by sihr, performed against him by a man named Labid ibn al-A'sam. Aisha (may Allah ﷻ be pleased with her) narrated the account in detail — how the Prophet ﷺ began imagining things he had not actually done, until Allah ﷻ revealed to him what had happened and where the sorcery had been hidden.
“Since Allah has cured me, I would not like to let evil spread amongst the people.”
— The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, upon Allah ﷻ curing him — Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih MuslimThis account matters for two reasons: it confirms that sihr is a real phenomenon acknowledged at the highest level of Islamic history, and it shows that even a Prophet ﷺ was not immune to it — meaning it is not a sign of weak faith to be affected, and there is no shame in seeking treatment.
How Sihr Commonly Shows Up
Because sihr can be directed at nearly any part of a person's life, its effects are wide-ranging. Some of the more commonly reported patterns include:
- Marital and relationship disruption — sudden, unexplained conflict, coldness, or separation between people who otherwise had no real reason to fall apart.
- Blockages in work, studies, or finances — repeated, unexplained failure despite genuine effort and qualification.
- Health problems that resist explanation — persistent pain, digestive issues, or conditions that doctors can identify but not resolve, with tests that come back inconclusive.
- Sudden shifts in mood or mental state — anger, anxiety, confusion, or behavior that feels out of character and doesn't respond to the usual means of addressing it.
Treating Sihr Through Ruqyah
The lawful and effective remedy for sihr is Ruqyah — treatment through the Quran, authentic supplications, and nothing else. The Quran itself is described as the direct antidote to magic:
“And We send down of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers.”
— Surah Al-Isra, 17:82A genuine Ruqyah session is not a mysterious ritual performed on you — it is a calm, respectful process of Quranic recitation, guided by a Rakee who understands both the condition and the boundaries of what is and isn't permissible in treatment. It's worth being clear that Ruqyah is not a replacement for medical treatment, and a responsible practitioner never presents it as one; many people pursue both in parallel. Healing is also often a process rather than a single event, and more than one session is common.
