Black Seed: The Prophetic Medicine for Every Disease

Prophetic Medicine · April 2026

Few remedies in Islamic tradition carry a statement as sweeping as the one made about black seed. This small, unassuming seed — used in our own healing oil blends — has one of the most direct endorsements found anywhere in the Hadith.

The Hadith

The Messenger ﷺ, peace be upon him, said:

“In the black seed is healing for every disease, except death.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari

This narration is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, one of the two most rigorously authenticated Hadith collections. Scholars have long noted the deliberate, almost absolute language here — "every disease" is about as strong a statement as exists anywhere in Prophetic medicine.

Some scholars have explained this not as a literal cure for every single ailment in isolation, but as a description of black seed's broad, general benefit to the body — supporting it in a way that assists in the treatment of a very wide range of conditions, rather than acting as a stand-alone cure for all of them individually. Either way, the emphasis placed on it in the Hadith is unmistakable.

What Is Black Seed?

Black seed — known botanically as Nigella sativa, and sometimes called black cumin or kalonji — is a small, dark seed native to South and Southwest Asia and parts of the Middle East. It's most commonly used as an oil, though the whole seeds themselves are also used in cooking and traditional remedies across the Muslim world.

Its distinctive compound, thymoquinone, has been the subject of a growing body of modern research exploring its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties — an area of genuine scientific interest, though we're always careful to frame this as supporting traditional use rather than claiming it as a substitute for medical treatment.

Traditional Uses

Within Prophetic medicine and broader traditional practice, black seed oil has historically been used to support:

These are traditional uses supported by centuries of practice — not medical claims, and not a replacement for treatment of any diagnosed condition. If you have a specific health concern, please speak with a qualified medical professional.

How We Use It in Our Sessions

Black seed oil plays a direct role in the Hijama process itself — after wet cupping, it's applied to the cleansed treatment area, consistent with Prophetic tradition. It's also the foundation of our dedicated Healing Oil Massage sessions, where it's used more broadly across the body for a full therapeutic experience.

We source high-quality black seed oil specifically for this purpose, and many clients continue applying it at home during the days following a Hijama session as part of their aftercare — see our guide on how to prepare for and care for yourself after Hijama for the full aftercare routine.

A Reminder of the Balance

Islamic tradition never asked its followers to rely on remedies alone, to the exclusion of trusting Allah ﷻ. As the well-known phrase goes: "Seek the cure, but place your trust in The One who cures." Black seed, like Hijama and Ruqyah, is a means — not the source — of healing.
